Welcome to WEMA's community links page. This page will be frequently updated with events and information designed for community involvement. With WEMA's new training center brings education classes from first aid/cpr to severe weather awareness directly to the communities we serve! Please check here often and register for upcoming classes!

UPCOMING CLASSES - All Classes 9:00am to 11:00am at the WEMA Training Center (across from main WEMA building)

February 23, 2008 - Pediatric Prevention of Injuries
Pediatrics are a very high risk group of individuals. There are many steps that can be taken to limit the potential of a
serious injury with children. Some of the topics of discussion will be use of seat belts and child restraint devices, use
of helmets, and installing safety devices such as fences around swimming pools.

April 26, 2008 - Weather Safety
With the increase in the last several years of deadly tornados in very close proximity of Wilson County there has been
a heightened awareness of severe weather. Wilson County EMA has several members that watch the weather in our
weather operations center during severe weather situations. This class will cover the capabilities of Wilson County
EMA, discuss the difference between watches and warnings and explain where the outdoor weather sirens are located
in Wilson County and when they are activated and tested. Wilson County EMA has a radio warning system in place in
all county & city schools as well as some local businesses that can broadcast important information as needed.

June 28, 2008 - General Home Fire Safety
Tennessee has one of the highest fire death rates in the United States. Several things can be done to decrease your
risk. This class will cover some of these items such as installing smoke detectors, checking the batteries in your smoke
detectors, installing carbon monoxide detectors, having a fire escape plan and many other safety related issues will be
discussed. This class will also cover fire extinguishers type and recommendations as well as actually using a simulated
fire extinguisher to extinguish a simulated fire.

August 23, 2008 - Stroke & Heart Attack Awareness
A stroke (Brain Attack) is the third (3rd) leading cause of death in the United States. There have been many treatment
improvements in stroke care in the last few years. However, the inability to recognize the signs of a stroke by the
general pubic has been proven to be very low. This delay in the ability to recognize a person is having a stroke can
delay and even prevent necessary and potentially life changing therapy to reduce the disability a stroke may cause.
We will emphasize the warning signs of a stroke, risk factors and general awareness.

Cardiovascular disease is the number one (1) killer in America. It is very important to know the signs and symptoms of
a heart attack and activate Emergency Medical Services (EMS) as soon as possible. Just like a stroke any delay in the
ability to recognize the person may be experiencing a heart attack can increase mortality. This class will cover risk
factors, signs and symptoms and emphasize how to recognize someone may be experiencing heart attack.

October 25, 2008 - Infant CPR
This class will cover assessment and management of life threatening situations in infants. It will teach CPR and relief
of an airway obstruction for the infant (less than 1 year of age). This class is targeted for new parents/grandparents or
expecting parents. This class is not designed for daycare workers to obtain training for OSHA requirements. Airway
obstructions are very common for infants, we strongly encourage anyone that is or will be caring for an infant to know
the proper way to relieve an airway obstruction and prevent what could be a deadly incident as well as knowing CPR in
the event it is ever needed.
